STARZ announced the purchase of Magic City: An American Fantasy which will air this summer on the network. The five-part docuseries explores “the story behind the famed Atlanta strip club, Magic City”, and its undeniable influence on hip-hop culture. Jermaine Dupri, Jami Gertz, and Bayan Joonan are all signed on as executive producers.

Since it opened its doors in 1985, Magic City has been a legendary Atlanta institution and catapulted many artists into superstardom as the club was known as  “Black Studio 54.” According to the press release.“Magic City: An American Fantasy tells the full tale of the storied club’s rise to global prominence and how it became the definitive king-maker in the hip-hop community.”

Founded by Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney that club attracted a high-profile clientele such as 2 Chainz, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, Quavo, Killer Mike, Big Boi, along with other  artists, dancers, and “behind-the-scenes players who ensured its iconic status.”

Magic City is the premier cultural hub in Atlanta. B.M.F. was known to hang out in the club when they were at the pinnacle of their powers. It also was the site of Stacey Abram’s get-out-the-vote announcement in 2020.

Creator and executive producer Cole Brown shared a statement about the importance of telling the story of the famed club.

“From politicians to artists, to drug kingpins, Magic City has been a home for a broad cross-section of Black Atlanta for decades,” Brown said. “Everyone should know the unbelievable story of this institution and the man who founded it, and STARZ is the perfect partner to bring it to the world. We’re thrilled.”

“When our family became the Majority Owners of The Atlanta Hawks, the Barneys were the very first people to welcome us to the city,” Gertz added. “They reached out to us with open arms and that great southern hospitality, not to mention the fact that Juju Barney and my sons became fast friends. I am honored to be a part of bringing their family’s story to the world. It’s a tale of tremendous heart and hustle! And a true love letter to our adopted home of Atlanta, Georgia!”
