Cleveland Cavaliers veteran Tristan Thompson is attempting to play peacemaker between two of the biggest icons in sports and music following a publicized rift.
Appearing on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast, Thompson told host Shannon Sharpe that he is actively working to facilitate a reunion between his longtime friend Drake and his former teammate LeBron James. The relationship between the four-time NBA champion and the OVO rapper reportedly soured during the height of Drake’s high-profile feud with Kendrick Lamar.
drake and LeBron James friendship:
While James and Drake enjoyed a years-long friendship that often saw them supporting each other’s careers, tensions rose when James was seen enjoying Lamar’s diss tracks. The distance between the stars became a point of speculation for fans, marking a rare moment of discord in their professional circle. “That’s my brother. … Drake’s my brother,” Thompson said during the interview, emphasizing the deep personal roots he shares with the Toronto native. Thompson noted that the “Certified Lover Boy” artist has been a constant presence in his life since he was 17 years old.
The bond was further solidified when Drake attended the funeral of Thompson’s mother in 2023, a gesture the NBA veteran said he would never forget. Sharpe pointedly asked Thompson if he could be the bridge that brings the two superstars back together.
Thompson admitted he is already putting in the effort behind the scenes to mend the fence. “I would love to,” Thompson said regarding a potential reconciliation. “Listen, yeah. Listen. I’m trying, man. I’m trying.” The tension between James and Drake appeared to be confirmed by the Lakers star last fall. In a previous interview, James noted that he and the rapper were simply in “different places right now,” though he maintained there was “always love” from his perspective. James added that he continues to wish the rapper the best, despite their current lack of proximity.
Thompson, a native of Brampton, Ontario, attributed his loyalty to Drake to a shared Canadian heritage. He explained that Canadian stars like himself, Drake, The Weeknd and PARTYNEXTDOOR often feel a collective need to support one another because they all entered their respective industries with a “chip on our shoulder.”
He credited Drake for leading the way for Canadians in the global entertainment market. Whether Thompson’s diplomacy will be enough to end the cold war remains to be seen. Drake has recently remained prolific, releasing a flurry of new music, while James continues to focus on his historic NBA career.
