The world of television has just felt a shockwave.

Today (Aug 14), Netflix has announced that they have acquired arguably the biggest writer in television in the past ten years is moving away from her recent home of ABC.

Shonda Rhimes, the brains being shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder has signed a multi-year deal with the streaming platform.

She will also be taking her production comany Shondaland with her in a huge deal that shocks the television industry and will be a division of Netflix’s in-house studio.

According to Deadline, she was in the middle of a four-year deal with ABC Studios which had one year left., but she negotiated an early exit so that she can make this deal official.

Rhimes will continue to work on the ABC/ABC shows Shondaland has on the air, the returning Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal — heading into its final season — and How To Get Away with Murder, and the upcoming For The People and a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff. ABC Studios also has pilot Adult Behavior with Allan Heinberg, and several other projects in various stages of development. It also has the creators and showrunners of the non-Rhimes created Shondaland series under overall deals.

Word is that, after twelve years, Rhimes was getting restless, feeling that she had accomplished all she could on broadcast TV and was looking for new opportunities to evolve as an artist and push the envelope.

The report states that she will continue working on shows Shondaland already has on the air. So Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away with Murder along with a series titled For The People and a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff.
