Although Doja Cat’s career is taking off, she’s dealing with some serious family issues.

Sometime last month, a clip of Doja Cat meeting Whoopi Goldberg for the first time, resurfaced online. In the clip, Doja reveals to Whoopi that she never met her father, Dumisani Dlamini, who was Whoopi’s castmate in Sarafina.

Whoopi puzzled people when she said Dumisani is a good man after is daughter revealed she never met him. Their relationship became estranged when he moved back to Africa to pursue his acting career when Doja was a baby. Although Doja doesn’t talk about her dad often, she’s stated they don’t have much of a relationship, aside from him commenting through Instagram on her success.

Recently, during an interview, Dumisani said Doja is exaggerating about their lack of relationship. He insisted that he’s trying to look for her and her team is blocking him from contacting her. He also claims that American media is always creating storylines that aren’t true.

“I have been looking for my daughter as well. You mustn’t forget these Americans. Americans will always want to have something to cause a stir, so that she stays in the media and is talked about around the world.”

“She got hold of me. We spoke. We connected. Now, at this time when she is there and on top, she has to grab the whole world[‘s attention], especially in SA because she is a South African and her daddy is here. It’s a made-up thing”.

Doja hasn’t publicly responded as of yet, however, recently teamed up with one of her role models, Nicki Minaj for the “Say So” remix.
