With Donald Trump exactly halfway through his four-year term in office, we are quickly approaching the midterm elections that will take place on November 6, 2018. TODAY, Friday, October 12,2018 is the very last day to register to vote in New York, which you can do here.

Although midterm elections usually generate a lower voter turnout than presidential elections, the midterms are crucial because we usually see the president’s party lose seats in congress. Check out five reasons why YOU need to register to vote below.

1. Register to vote to help make The White House pro-choice again.

Let’s keep it real; the white house is pretty conservative right now! If we all get out and vote and get more members of the democratic party in congress we can possibly make the House of Representatives majority pro-choice.

2. Register to vote so that others are not deciding for you.

When you opt out of voting you let others decide who wins and what issues matter the most. Today, non-voters actually favor government and social services (like access to healthcare, spending on education, income equality, or public safety) at a much higher rate than people who vote regularly.

3. Register to vote for the sake of your community.

Issa fact that neighborhoods and communities that vote get more attention from candidates and office holders, unfortunately they are less likely to visit and listen to communities that do not participate in elections.

4. Register to vote because there was a time when it was against the law for many of us to do so.

At one point, only white men were able to vote. Tons of people lost their lives fighting for voting rights during the Civil Rights Era. Practicing your right to vote would make some of our freedom fighters like Martin Luther King Jr., Bayard Rustin, and Fred Hampton very proud.
