Doechii made history at the 2025 Grammy Awards as the third woman to win the Best Rap Album category. During her acceptance speech, she took a moment to inspire young Black girls watching, saying, “I know there is some Black girl out there [watching,] and I want to tell you that you can do it. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes onto you. You are exactly who you need to be where you are, and I am a testimony to that.”
Her breakthrough album, Alligator Bites Never Heal, beat out projects from rap legends such as Common and Pete Rock, Eminem, Future and Metro Boomin, and J. Cole. The win solidified Doechii’s place in history, following in the footsteps of Lauryn Hill, who won as part of the Fugees in 1996, and Cardi B, who became the first female solo rapper to win in 2019 with Invasion of Privacy. Cardi presented Doechii with her award, passing the torch to the next trailblazing female artist.
In addition to her win, Doechii was also nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance for her song “Nissan Altima.” She wowed audiences with a dramatic and powerful performance during the show, including her hit “Denial Is a River.” She described it as one of the most challenging performances of her career, explaining, “It was one of the most difficult performances I’ve done, and I really felt the need to push myself harder than I ever have before. It really meant everything to me to prove myself tonight.” She added, “To me, it was about Broadway and theater and art, and I think I brought that to the stage.” During her acceptance speech, she further inspired with a powerful message.
