Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been ruled out for the remainder of the NFL season following the discovery of multiple blood clots in his lungs, according to team reports.

The diagnosis represents a significant escalation of a medical issue that surfaced just over a week ago. The health scare began when Hurts was initially diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in his calf. Despite the initial discovery, Hurts reportedly played through the discomfort during the Eagles’ Oct. 11 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

However, the situation worsened following the international trip, leading to his absence from the team’s recent game against the Carolina Panthers. Medical professionals have since identified that the clots migrated to his lungs, a condition known as a pulmonary embolism. The 28-year-old quarterback is now undergoing a rigorous treatment regimen that includes blood-thinning medication and frequent diagnostic imaging to monitor his progress.

“This is a scary situation”

“This is a scary situation for any athlete,” said NFL insider Adam Schefter, who first reported that Hurts would miss the rest of the 2026 campaign. The discovery of lung clots is considered life-threatening if not managed properly, as they can lead to sudden respiratory failure or cardiac arrest. The Eagles organization is expected to face questions regarding the management of Hurts’ initial leg injury.

Reports indicate the quarterback was permitted to play in London despite the known presence of a clot in his leg, a decision that medical experts often advise against due to the risk of the clot traveling through the bloodstream during physical exertion or long-distance air travel.

The team has not yet provided a specific timeline for his return to physical activity, emphasizing that his long-term health remains the primary priority.

Fans and players alike have taken to social media to offer support for the quarterback, whose season ends abruptly as he focuses on a full recovery from this serious medical diagnosis.
