Missy Elliot is the latest to join a coming-of-age musical adventure from the minds of Michel Gondry and Pharrell Williams.
According to Deadline, the Grammy-winning multi-hyphenate artist has been cast in a role for director Michel Gondry and producer Pharrell Williams’ new untitled feature for Universal Pictures.
Although, Missy Elliott’s role in the upcoming musical, set in Virginia Beach during a groovy summer is 1977, is hush-hush for now—just like the rest of the cast. We know that the film draws inspiration from the city’s Atlantis Apartments and Pharrell Williams’ childhood neighborhood.
Also starring alongside Elliott are Kelvin Harrison Jr., Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Halle Bailey, and Brian Tyree Henry.
Missy’s involvement in the project follows her recent announcement of her inaugural headlining tour.
In early April, the rapper behind hits like “Get Ur Freak On,” took to social media to unveil a major announcement: the Out of This World Tour is officially on, and she’s not going alone. Alongside her for the cosmic journey are longtime collaborators Busta Rhymes, Timbaland, and Ciara.
Starting on July 4 in Vancouver, the 24-city tour will kick off in Vancouver before making stops in cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, New York, and Toronto, concluding on August 22 in Rosemont, Illinois.
“This is an incredible time in my life as I am experiencing so many milestone ‘firsts,’” Elliott said in a press release, reports Variety. “Being the FIRST female Hip Hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now going out on my FIRST headline tour.
“Fans have been asking me to tour forever but I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right because I knew if I was ever going to do it, I had to do it big, and I had to do it with family!
“So get ready to be taken OUT OF THIS WORLD with me, Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and Timbaland! We can’t wait to share this experience with the fans!”
