Lifetime’s six-part docuseries Surviving R. Kelly hasn’t been released yet, and it is already causing tons of controversy.

Jovante Cunningham is a former backup singer who had toured with R. Kelly in the 1990’s. In a clip, during the first episode of the show, she claims she witnessed the singer having sexual relations with a 15-year-old Aaliyah on a tour bus.

“On a tour bus, there really aren’t many confined spaces,” she reportedly said. “When you get on the bus there are bunks and so these bunks have little curtains you can pull at night if you don’t want anybody to see you sleeping. So it just so happened we were all laying in our bunks and the curtains are open, everybody’s communicating, laughing. When the [room] door flew open on the bus. Robert was having sex with Aaliyah.”

Aaliyah’s mother, Diane Haughton addressed the comments, claiming that Cunningham was lying.

“The woman and so-called back up singer … that describes seeing, meeting or even breathing the same air as my daughter, Aaliyah, is lying and is a liar.”

It has long been rumored that R. Kelly married Aaliyah when she was 16-years-old, later to be annulled.

According to TMZ, R. Kelly’s legal team is fighting to stop the airing of the documentary, because they claim it is “packed with lies.”
