Should Lil Nas X be on the country music Billboard charts?

According to Rolling Stone, the artists’ single “Old Town Road” debuted on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart as well as Hot 100 chart, and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

It seems like the growing popularity of the track wasn’t quite accepted on the country music chart as Billboard decided to remove the track from the charts by telling Lil Nas X’s label Columbia Records that it was a mistake.

“Upon further review, it was determined that ‘Old Town Road’ by Lil Nas X does not currently merit inclusion on Billboard‘s country charts. When determining genres, a few factors are examined, but first and foremost is musical composition. While ‘Old Town Road’ incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.”

Of course the controversy is only helping fuel the track’s popularity.

Following the news, he expressed his disappointment in an Instagram post.
