Rihanna Shares Heartfelt Family Tradition Carried On With Sons

Rihanna wasted no time passing on an important family tradition to her young sons, RZA, aged one, and Riot Rose, aged seven months, whom she shares with A$AP Rocky. In a recent interview, she explained why she felt it was crucial to share this tradition with her boys.

Rihanna graced the cover of Vogue China‘s April 2024 issue, showcasing her long, braided hair in an Instagram video. During the interview, she discussed how she and Rocky learned about the history of braiding from various regions and ethnic groups, which emphasized the significance of hair for her.

“This is a form of protection of our roots, and a tradition left by our ancestors,” Rihanna explained. “… [it] makes us realize where we’ve come from.”

She expressed her desire for her children to embrace this tradition, recognizing it as a part of their cultural heritage. Rihanna also touched upon the importance of exposing her children to diverse perspectives as they grow older, noting that hairstyles like braids are integral to her and Rocky’s cultural identity.

Rihanna then talked about braids from a visual perspective, mentioning that there are “lots of styles you can create.” She reminisced about her own childhood, recalling how many kids and relatives had braids.

Rihanna reflected on the enduring significance of braids in her life. “My mom also braids my hair, but she always sends me to the salon to get it braided because it lasts longer,” the Fenty Beauty Founder said with a smile. With her sons, RZA and Riot Rose, now introduced to this cherished tradition, Rihanna’s commitment to preserving her cultural heritage and passing it down to the next generation shines brightly.
